Transportation with Myanmar to be developed |

Dhaka, Feb 16 (UNB) – Bangladesh today proposed developing direct road communications with Myanmar for boosting bilateral trade and investment. “There is no alternative to easy mode of transportation in enhancing trade and investment between the two countries,” Commerce Minister Abdul Jalil told Myanmar Commerce Minister DO Abel in a meeting in Yangon. Jalil is now on a visit to the neighbouring country. He said direct Bangladesh-Myanmar road link would expedite cross-border trade and investment, a message here said. Bangladesh has established cross-border communications with India and transit transport with Nepal. Road link with another neighbour, Bhutan, is under consideration. He requested Myanmar to increase import from Bangladesh. Proposed goods include ceramics, melamine, readymade garments, cosmetics, sanitary ware, GI pipe, electric wire, leather goods and medicine. He called upon Myanmar to add few goods, including medicine, live animals and wood, in the item list of border trade. Highlighting investment incentives offered by Bangladesh, Jalil sought personal cooperation of the Myanmar minister for encouraging Myanmar entrepreneurs to invest in Bangladesh. He also proposed to arrange single-country or joint trade fair to increase bilateral trade. Jalil requested the Myanmar minister to allow free movement of Bangladeshi businessmen in Myanmar to facilitate export-import trade they way Bangladesh provides for Myanmar businessmen. At present, Bangladeshi businessmen can stay in Myanmar for three days and it’s mandatory for them to stay at hotel while Mayanmar businessmen can stay in Bangladesh for seven days and staying at hotel is not mandatory. Myanmar Commerce Minister DO Abel stressed exchanging official and business delegations between the two countries to facilitate them identify potential areas of investment. He apprised the Bangladesh minister of his government’s interest in infrastructure development, including road communications, to boost bilateral trade. He also informed the minister of Myanmar government’s interest to diversify goods for enhanced border trade. Abel assured Jalil of taking necessary steps so that Bangladeshi businessmen and investors could operate in Myanmar. |
